En el Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Vídeos piratillas, sí, pero de momento es lo que hay.

Neil Young:
"I don't have a TelePrompTer. I don't have any notes. I don't have any real … thoughts. I'm kind of blank. But I will say that this next man is undescribable and I'm here to describe him, or I'm going to try to describe what he does and why he's here. I can't tell you much about his life, because I don't really think that matters in the scope of things. This man is a great … he's sort of a singer-actor-magician-spirit-guide-changeling kind of performer. And I've seen him standing in the middle of dust [indecipherable] and I thought I saw little sparkle things coming out from him, and I looked down while he was singing and I said, "This man is performing and I'm seeing maybe three or four of him up there, and they all seem to be waiting for the other ones to finish so that they can come in." And one of them was whistling at me and one of them was singing in Tom's kind of voice, and then the Eagles covered it."

Tom Waits:

I just want to know if there's a key-chain version that I can keep with me just in case I hear someone say, "Pete, take the cuffs off. I think he's a Hall of Famer." Thank you for the kind words, Neil. I'm honored to be honored. And, gee, I don't know where to begin. Songs, uh, are really just interesting things to be doing with the air. I love working with tunes. I love music, but we really want music to love us. Neil was saying the other night, he said, "When there's a song approaching it's kind of like there's an animal in the room, and you don't want it to run off." You know, how did it get in?

I was, uh, fifteen and I snuck in to see Lightnin' Hopkins. I put white-out in my hair and I drew on a mustache and I put on an overcoat and I stood there and I said, "Ticket for one." Amazing show. Every time he opened his mouth, that orchestra of gold teeth was just devastating. And then I saw him leave the show and he walked through a door and slammed the door behind him. And on the door, it said, I swear to God, "KEEP OUT. THIS ROOM IS FOR ENTERTAINERS ONLY." And I knew at that moment that I had to get into show business as soon as possible. So, uh, that was a real big one for me. And I've had the pleasure and the privilege of playing with a lot of great musicians over the years. Some of you are here and some of you are not here. Some of us are on the wrong side of the dirt, as they say. But any day on this side of the dirt is a good day, for me and for all of us.

Let's see, what else? They told me I should talk for quite a while, but I don't intend to. I fully do not intend to. I'd like to thank my family. They know me and they love me anyway. My wife and her incandescent light that has guided me and kept me alive and breathing and sparkling. And my kids who, well, they taught me everything I know. Or maybe they taught me everything they know. I don't know. They taught me a lot.

Okay, I did the bit about the door and the club. Um, the first time I went onstage, my face felt like it was made of plaster and if I smiled, it would crack off, and I thought, "This is such an interesting [Christian?] experience" and somehow wanted more of it. They say I have no hits and I'm difficult to work with, and they say that like it's a bad thing. [crowd cheers] The only thing I really can compare this to is I was given the key to the city of El Paso several months ago. It was a really kind offer. They told me there's only one key to the city, but I found out later there were a whole lot of them, and they fit nothing. So, I'm just hoping there are some fringe benefits that go along with this baby. Thank you very much. This has been very encouraging.

"This is just like the piano my mom got me. She couldn't afford it, but she threw a brick through a window and got that piano. She only got seven years for it. She was a good mom, from jail."

"Dicen que no tengo hits y que soy difícil de tratar... y lo dicen como si fuera algo malo"

Desde anoche, Tom Waits ya es miembro del Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Sea lo que sea lo que esto significa.

Neil Young fue el encargado de presentar a Waits como intérprete, cantante, actor, mago, guía espiritual y camaleón. "Es indescriptible, y aquí estoy yo, intentando describirlo", dijo.

A continuación Tom Waits hizo un pequeño discurso en su tono habitual: "Dicen que no tengo hits y que soy difícil de tratar... y lo dicen como si fuera algo malo". "Las canciones en realidad son solamente cosas interesantes que puedes hacer con el aire".

Cogiendo la estatuilla, Waits comentó que "pesa mucho. Me pregunto si hay una versión en llavero que pueda llevar conmigo de manera que algún día algún tipo diga "¡Pete, quítale las esposas! ¡Es miembro del Hall of Fame!"

A continuación comparó la situación con la entrega de la llave de la ciudad de El Paso de la que fue objeto en su última gira. "Me dijeron que sólo había una, pero después descubrí que hay un montón, y no abren nada. Así que espero que esto sea más útil".

Por último, Waits tocó algunos temas en directo acompañado de Mark Ribot y David Hidalgo (Los Lobos) a las guitarras, Larry Taylor al contrabajo y Casey Waits a la batería. Neil Young se unió a la banda en la canción final.

Suponemos que a lo largo de la semana aparecerán grabaciones de la actuación en directo.

Waits estuvo ausente de la actuación conjunta final de todos los protagonistas de la noche, en la que Darlene Love, Bette Midler, Doctor John, Alice Cooper y Neil Diamond cantaron el éxito de los 60 Da Doo Ron Ron. Lástima. Hubiese estado bien.

La contraportada de Rain Dogs

El New York Times de hace unos días recordaba cómo se hizo la fotografía de la contraportada de Rain Dogs. Hablan Tom Waits y el mítico fotógrafo Robert Frank.

Tom Waits: "Estaba intentando imaginarme que era un auténtico neoyorquino, y era difícil. Mi mujer estaba embarazada de nuestro segundo hijo; vivíamos en la calle 14, encima de un restaurante chino-cubano. Pero en aquel momento no podía creerme que Robert Frank iba a retratarme. El disco se llamaba Rain Dogs, así que esperábamos encontrar un día de lluvia, pero no pudimos. Pero encontramos el único charco del parque, y ahí estoy yo, agachado como un perro. Quizás esa era la idea: voy a ponerme en el punto de vista de un perro. De todas maneras, no sé porqué a la gente de la música nos gusta ponernos en cuclillas. Quizás queremos sentirnos más cerca del suelo. Yo todavía estoy ahí, de hecho. Estoy en cuclillas ahora mismo".

Robert Frank: "Creo que él vio el charco, y fue idea suya sentarse allí. Tom se siente cómodo en esa postura, y es un buen ángulo. Creo que es muy consciente de todo cuando está siendo fotografiado, la pose que toma, la manera como se mueve, y la manera como va a quedar la foto. De todas maneras, esa es una de sus posturas favoritas. Se sienta así".

The Pogues recuerdan una noche de 1986

En una entrevista a Time Out Chicago:

“Before our first show there in 1986, in the afternoon before our sound check, we went to see Tom Waits doing Frank’s Wild Years at the Steppenwolf,” Stacy starts. “It was great, obviously.” The Gary Sinise–directed production, written by Waits and his wife, Kathleen Brennan, was near the end of its eight-week run at the Briar Street Theatre. The sold-out play was based on a song from the gravelly pianist’s 1983 breakthrough, Swordfishtrombones. Waits, who has since listed the Pogues’ 1985 album Rum, Sodomy and the Lash as one of his ten favorite records, was excited to spot the band, which made its presence known.

Pogues accordionist James Fearnley laughed so raucously during the production that he ruined a bootleg the band was taping. During a post-show Q&A, Fearnley commandeered the theater’s piano to play an improvised tango based on Elmer Bernstein’s theme from Exodus.

“Waits was doing the show again that evening,” Stacy recalls, “but he came and caught our last couple of numbers.” The crowd demanded several encores, one of which coaxed to the stage a reluctant Elvis Costello, who had produced Rum, Sodomy & the Lash and was traveling with his bride of two months, Pogues bassist Cait O’Riordan. “Then we went out drinking with Tom,” Spider says.

Actor Aidan Quinn, coincidentally in town, tagged along and helped guide Waits and the Pogues on their North Side bar-hop. “Then there was one that had a piano in it,” Stacy explains. “Tom started playing. You can’t ask for anything more than that.” The bar they ended up in was Holstein’s on Lincoln, a small club on its last legs that was owned by folksinger Fred Holstein. Costello eventually made his way to the watering hole and belted a few tunes himself. Yet Stacy’s fondest memory of the evening came when the group drunkenly crossed the street to check out the infamous alley of the Biograph Theater. “Tom showed us the spot where Dillinger had been shot by the FBI,” Stacy remembers with a chuckle. “His wife took a photograph of me standing over the body of our old lighting engineer Paul Verner. Sadly, he is really dead now. I had my tin whistle in my hand, pointing it at him like it was a gun.

“The pictures were kind of juvenile,” Stacy says with a sigh, a quarter century later. “But I don’t suppose you can get more Chicago than that.”

The Briar and the Rose en vivo en Edimburgo

Pues al final la participación de Tom Waits en la David Lynch Foundation de la que hablábamos el otro día no va a traducirse en una nueva canción. O al menos no exactamente.

Ya se ha hecho público que el tema cedido por Tom Waits para este proyecto es una toma en directo de The Briar and the Rose grabada en Edinburgo durante el último Glitter and Doom Tour.

En ella, Tom Waits interpreta la canción acompañado únicamente del piano.

Marc Ribot acompañará a Tom Waits en la gala del Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

El guitarrista Marc Ribot ha anunciado que acompañará a Tom Waits en dos temas que interpretará en la próxima gala de investidura en el Rock and Roll Hall of Fame que se celebrará el 14 de marzo en Nueva York.

Marc Ribot es el guitarrista que toca en algunas de las grabaciones más emblemáticas de Tom Waits, en los discos Rain Dogs, Franks Wild Years, Big Time, Mule Variations, Real Gone y Orphans.

La última vez que tocaron juntos fue en la gira de Real Gone (2004).

¿Participará Marc Ribot en el nuevo disco que está grabando Tom Waits en estos momentos?
